Linden Cup: MT beats Hüttenberg, finishes tournament in second place

The pre-season Linden Cup tournament in Linden, Germany came to a close for the MT with a victory, their second of the tournament. One day after topping fellow Bundesliga side SC Magdeburg 33-29, the squad from North Hesse claimed a hard-fought 31-30 (13-17) win against newly promoted second league team TV Hüttenberg.

The MT team, who had spent the overnight in Linden, was still recovering from a tough training session on Saturday before throwing off against Hüttenberg in the evening. It was no surprise then that they at times fell behind by five or even six goals during the first half. "From the 40th minute though we turned the match right around", noted MT President Axel Geerken about his undermanned red/white squad. In addition to Johan Sjöstrand, Marino Maric (both injured) and U20 Euros starter Johannes Golla, the squad was also without Philipp Müller. He was recovering from a rib injury in the Magdeburg match. Timm Schneider was also forced from the court during the match with back problems.

His colleagues nevertheless picked up the slack. Goalkeeper René Villadsen proved a steady bulwark, just as he had done a day earlier. With Michael Allendorf spending time in the backcourt, young Fin Backs from the Juniors A Bundesliga team manned the left wing spot to gain experience. The winning goal to make it 31-29 came from well-positioned right wing Arjan Haenen, a new recruit from Lemgo. (B. Mahr, HNA)
Goals by Melsungen: Langhans 3, Fahlgren 4, Danner 2, Rnic 5, Allendorf 5, Vuckovic 3, M. Müller 2, Haenen 7.
