The new 2016/17 season hasn't even started and the one after that is barely a blip on the horizon, but handball Bundesliga club MT Melsungen is already working hard on future success with a spectacular personnel announcement for next year. Tobias Reichmann, a reigning European Champion, Champions League winner and Olympic Games player in Rio, will be taking over Johannes Sellin's spot starting in the 2017/18 season. Sellin's four-year contract will be expiring. Reichmann, currently playing for Polish champions Vive Tauron Kielce, signed a three-year futures contract with the MT.
As the Olympic handball tournament gets rolling in Rio, Tobias Reichmann picked up on Sunday right where he left off at the European Championship: His six goals in six attempts made him the second best German scorer behind Julius Kühn in the 32-29 victory over Sweden. Six months ago he and the rest of his German teammates became European Champions, with his 46 goals ranking him as second-best scorer in the tournament — enough for nomination to the all-tournament team. In May his Polish club KS Kielce won the Champions League title, his third time after 2010 and 2012 with THW Kiel. While still playing for the club with the zebra kit he also won the Super Globe, the club world championship, in 2011. No question, Tobias Reichmann is one of the most successful trophy collectors in this sport in recent history. The 28 year old has hardly hidden his desire to return to the Bundesliga after three years in Poland, and now he's signed a contract as the replacement for his teammate on the national team Johannes Sellin.
"From a personnel standpoint, we had to make a choice between two top-flight players. Johannes has really progressed during his time with us and has become one of our stars. Yet Tobias Reichmann brings even greater experience and success at the international level. We're convinced he'll help us break through to the next level," coach Michael Roth explains.
"When we sign new players, we are always focused on developing the team as a whole, which is why we're pleased to have recruited a player as talented as Tobias Reichmann. That kind of transfer is hardly automatic", Axel Geerken explains. The MT president is also satisfied in another regard: "This personnel decision establishes transparency for both the club and for Johannes about the future – allowing both sides to concentrate on the tasks at hand".
